Last night's show was incredible and definitely one of the best garage shows. Magic Pelvis and Lightmares put on stunning sets as always and the turn out was awesome. There were some new faces that came out to the show and they all seemed so friendly. I still can't get over The Dirty Nil's set. That band is probably the best band with melody ever. They closed the show with a new song called "Fucking Up Young", what an unreal song. I can't wait to play with this band again and see what else they come up with. As far as I know Greg Norri showed up at their house with cameras two days ago and they are going to be on the first season of(I think this is what it is now called) Discovered. Apparently it's pretty different from Disband...they took out all the drama and it isn't staged anymore. It's going to be an hour long and pretty much solely about the band and their music. I'm really stoked to see it. Also every band's set was filmed last night by Shawn Kosmo, so once I get the footage, I will be sure to post it on here.

Along with my son's band we have been hosting all-ages shows out of a 16 x 24(PRETTY SMALL SPACE) garage in Sudbury, Ontario known as MILLARD'S GARAGE for the past two years. I have provided sound for such Canadian Talent as FUCKED UP, Yukon Blonde, Attack in Black , Parlovr, Slow Down Molassas, Diemonds, Shotgun Jimmie, Attack in Black, the list goes on and on. I am frequently told that the sound is amazing and have been quoted as providing "better sound than half the venues in Canada". Im not sure if that is true but apparently we are doing something right.

I have learned some interesting things, the first of which and least surprising to me is that the bands who have a good handle on the concept of back line volume and dynamics, seem to have gained much more success than those who haven't spent much time thinking about it. Secondly I have learned that their must be a lot of people out there that just do a crappy job at sound reinforcment, which concerns me because some really great talent is not being heard properly due to poor sound management.

Too many bands confuse distorted sound with loud sound. Sometimes I will hear , "WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LOUD MAN ITS OUR THING", reality check "LOUD DISTORTED DYNAMICALLY
INCORRECT SOUND HURTS PEOPLES EARS" and does not leave the crowd with a great impression of your talent.

On the other hand a well dynamically balanced, extremely LOUD band, can be most memorable and enjoyable. If you are a band that plays music and want to be LOUD,memorable and enjoyable for your audience, keep reading, if you couldn't give a shit about great sound as long as it is really loud, no need to waste any more time here.

Vocals,Vocals,Vocals

One of the biggest problems with the the sound at many venues is getting the vocals sitting clean and audible in the mix. Time and time again I have seen bands playing great shows where half the crowd EXITS or is looking for a pair of ear plugs half way through the first song...THIS IS NOT A COMPLIMENT PEOPLE! The crowd is TRYING TO HEAR THE LYRICS AND PUTTING EAR PLUGS IN TO CUT DOWN THE PAINFUL DISTORTED FREQUENCIES! IN ORDER TO TRY TO "ENJOY THE MUSIC"

Please take note as you read through this article. I am a full supporter of protecting everyones hearing and sometimes hearing protection is needed, even in the best dynamically balanced venue's due to overly high decibel levels, especially in small rooms where sound pressures can get extreme.

Most often these frequencies that hurt our ears or drown out the vocals are coming from three main problem areas.

#1- Band members just crank everything up and don't give a shit about dynamics, "SOUNDS FINE TO ME SYNDROME"(which we hopefully have already covered).

#2- Guitar amps tone set wrong for the room (could be volume to high or even just a small EQ adjustment or simply turning the cab to a different angle away from the audience). Turning your cab away from the crowd works especially well for you BIG RIG guys/gals.

#3 Crash cymbals constantly ringing out over top of the entire mix, canceling vocal frequencies. ENSURE DURING SOUND CHECK VOCALS CUT THROUGH CYMBAL STRIKES! Drums can be hard to control in small rooms, use of rigid plastic brushes can help tremendously especially if cymbals need taming.

#4 Bass guitar/kick drum tone too deep for the room size(bass has a bad habit of frequency cancellation, especially when it comes to vocals, ROLLING OFF A LITTLE LOW END CAN PROVIDE MORE HEADROOM FOR VOCALS)

#5 Lack of vocal monitoring for singers. Provide decent vocal monitoring and any band will play more dynamically correct(in ear monitoring is awesome for this but too pricey for most of us).

How do you self correct you're sound?

Get out in front of the P.A during sound check to get a more accurate indication of what the crowd is hearing and set your levels from that point of listening. You will be surprised at the improved dynamic results of this practice. You guitarists will also realize pretty quick how loud you are, not that loud is bad it can be good as long as all members are dynamically balanced. You don't want to sound like you are soloing the entire night this will cause most drummers to over compensate or compete with you for space in the mix and that is when everything will go to hell.

I have had the pleasure of performing sound reinforcement for some extremely varied genres including gospel/country right up to the opposite end of the scale with screamo. One thing I can tell you I have learned is that it all sounds better to everyone when vocals can easily be heard and recognized, even SCREAMO can be enjoyable to a 40 year old guy like me with a country music upbringing as long as I can hear and understand what all the screaming is about. Everyone needs a good scream now and again.

#1 Throw out the current concept of what you "think" you sound like to the crowd and actually have a friend or better yet someone who has never heard you before that you trust to be honest (ensure that individual actually enjoys the genre you are playing)and have them critique your set. People can be brutally honest when asked to be!
Talk to the sound guy/gal between sets on overall sound. Talk to the crowd ask them how the sound is. 'I can't hear the vocals" means the vocals are not being heard...not rocket science people, ask the sound guy to tweak the vocals up a bit it may be possible or you may need to turn down a little to give the sound guy some headroom to increase the vocal faders. Be prepared to compromise.

Believe me when I tell you, what you are hearing on stage is rarely what the crowd is hearing. This is however is a concept that I believe too many sound men/women should think about more. I always try to ensure the back line sound quality first and foremost, then due my best to duplicate that sound in the front of house. This isn't always possible for various reasons and sometimes back line quality needs to suffer in order to achieve good front of house sound. As a professional you need to be aware of this and always remember that it is what it sounds like to the audience that matters most.

#2 Stop blaming the crappy P.A or sound guy all the time. Although a crappy P.A or unprofessional sound tech can be limiting, even the smallest low powered P.A. can provide acceptable results if you learn to adjust the dynamics and volume levels of your equipment to equal that of the capabilities of the system(don't over play the P.A). It is always better to turn down a little than you ideally would like to be, than to just accept the P.A system sucks and have your lead singer or worse the "crowd" unable to hear the vocals. This may not be as big of factor if you are a cover band playing "HITS" that everyone in the crowd knows all the lyrics to, but if you are trying to make you mark with original music you will want people to be singing your songs to themselves in there heads or out loud to their friends well after you have moved on to the next show. You want people to buy your CD/LP on the night of the show directly after hearing your live set, people will assume your recordings will sound equally as good or as crappy as the music they just heard. Nobody wants to pay 20 bucks for a shirt to advertise a crappy sounding band. Remember this "NOT everyone knows what great live sound is, but almost everyone has heard a crappy sounding show and almost always it is poor vocal presence in the mix that will determine one opinion or the other to the average Jack or Diane".

Don't reinforce what does not require reinforcement. I always shake my head when I see a sound guy micing up a 8 x10 300w + guitar cab or D.I the 8 x10 500w + bass amp before a sound check begins in a small venue 200 or less people. Chances are in most small venue's this cab will not require any reinforcement, on the other hand I am in favor of letting the P.A do its job and micing or D.I that same cab at a low stage volume(using it as a monitor), thus having the ability to actually control the F.O.H guitar/bass volume in the mix in order to achieve good stereo imagery. The problem is finding guitar/bass players that are satisfied using that same cab at a low stage volume level to achieve better F.O.H sound. Chances are they have big money invested in that loud gear and they want to use it loud, or in the case of valve(tube amps) they require pushing the tubes into that sweet spot that only is heard at a higher volume level. A great product to fix this problem is called the hot plate which allows the amp to be cranked into that sweet spot while attenuating the output overall volume.

I find it better to listen to a short sound check first, then only reinforce what actually needs it, this will allow for the most possible headroom in the P.A for vocal channels and most times a overall better dynamic.

#3 When all else fails and for whatever reason you just cant get the tone you need without cranking it up until people are looking for hearing protection(warn the crowd out of respect for their hearing before you begin and bring enough ear plugs for everyone) you will find that many people that walk out half way through your set were actually enjoying your music and would have stuck around for the second half but their ears are ringing and the "FLIGHT" factor kicks in and the safety response in their brain is telling them "GET AWAY" from this "DANGER".

When things get out of control and it is something that is related to the sound guy/girl don't freak out and get pissed off and risk ruining what part of the mix is still sounding good, most audience members are not musicians and won't have any idea that a small sound problem is occurring and at the same time most sound men/women will correct things up fairly quickly. Do make eye contact or gestures if possible so the sound guy/gal is made aware of the issue, you may be getting feedback in a monitor and it isn't audible in the F.O.H but is really irritating the band, take note of your position on stage it may be your proximity to a monitor that is causing the problem,If you do allot of jumping around and swinging the mic around during your set you should have done that during the sound check so the sound guy would be prepared for proximity feedback problems.

The last thing you want to do is piss off the sound guy/girl when you are relying on them for the rest of the night to respect you. It is a good habit to ensure you communicate what sound you are trying to achieve with the sound guy/girl well in advance of you set , even better send them a demo,link to a website etc, if vocals are not supposed to be front and centre then communicate that,sometimes vocals are more ambient and not meant to be pushed forward in the mix however if you don't communicate that to the sound tech he/she will almost always try to bring the vocals front and centre.

Also when the night goes off great and you are being complimented on your sound remember who the guy/girl was behind the desk as sound guy/girls we always get the shit if things don't sound great buy nobody seems to even realize the complicated adventure it can be working with a band you never met before ,whose music you haven heard before and often making constant adjustments on the fly throughout the set to ensure a memorable ,enjoyable experience for both band and audience. This goes the same for you sound guys/girls when a band comes in with a good understanding of dynamics and makes it easy for you to do your job, THANK THE BAND, as they just did half your job for you.

Hopefully someone somewhere will get something useful from this article,if you did GREAT, if you did not there is only three reasons:

#1 You know all this already and probably have a great dynamically correct show and have overcome a huge hurdle that many bands just never seem to understand.

#2 You just don't care and will be happy sounding like a million other really loud distorted bands and until you do, people will be walking out on your band mid set or holding their fingers in their ears instead of waving arms or raising devil fingers.

#3 A really loud distorted mix with no dynamic quality is exactly what you are going for artistically so none of this really matters to you.

Whatever your number I hope you had a fun read...now go do something productive. Rock On!

Tomorrow marks the 2nd anniversary of putting on shows at the garage. Thanks to everyone who always makes the shows so great! Pinic Party #3 happend there on Thursday and it was fantastic. James recorded Magic Pelvis's set and they plan on selling a couple cd-r's at upcoming shows. Play Guitar played the garage last night and they put on a really good show. Stephen Giroux's new band Coast Redwood also played and they we're great. Stephen's songs are insanely hooky and really well written, can't wait to see them again!

Also on the bill are Lightmares, Magic Pelvis and us. This is happening August 18th, so next Wednesday. Much thanks to Dan Dyer, here's the Fake Love Songs EP by Attack in Black. It was recorded as a tape and handed out at the Austrailian festival Soundwave. Hopefully these songs will be on the new record or at least see official release. They actually opened with Empty Song at River and Sky. Come see them play the Townehouse on the 15th with Vicious Cycle.

Jesse informed me that the Constantines are playing with Julie Doiron and Ladyhawk at Lee's Palace but it's 19+. Constantines are also doing two other shows at Lee's Palace which are also 19+. Such a bummer that bands don't do matinee shows. It was the same thing with Built to Spill, two 19+ shows but no matinee show. It's really frustrating to be a younger music fan nowadays. I've missed a bunch of shows I really wanted to see because of my age and it almost seems unfair. Ian Mackaye has said he has never played a strictly 19+ show in his life and it'd be nice if some of these bands had that kind of mentality. It is kind of a bummer that music would even be restricted so people could drink, especially if the people don't even care all that much about the music. It'd be nice to find some common ground.

On another subject, December 1st everyone should go out and grab Dan, Julie and Fred being released on You've Changed. Here's the story from Exclaim!

"This summer, Canadian indie rockers Julie Doiron, Fred Squire and Attack in Black’s Daniel Romano convened in Sackville, NB for a recording session in Squire's garage. Together, the group quickly crafted simple acoustic arrangements of traditional folk songs, ending up with a new album under the moniker Daniel, Fred & Julie.

With instrumentation entirely made up of two guitars and three-part harmonies, the ten-song collection was recorded live-to-tape without the luxury of overdubs or edits, and it was all done in just two days. As well as folk standards, the album contains two original songs: "Runner" and "Your Love," both written by Romano.

The trio’s self-titled album will be released on December 1 via You've Changed and will come with the below tracklisting."

The Library Voices show was awesome. Actually, I didn't get to catch Library Voices and I'm bummed about that but the other acts were great. I've been to a couple Lightmares jams the past week,and their new stuff is amazing. Nicholas is an amazing bass player and you really get to hear it. Plus they might be adding a little homage to the Vapors in one song. Awesome!

I listened to The Madcap Laughs by Syd Barrett and it is unreal. One of my favourite listens in a while. You can definitely hear Dan Bejar's(Destroyer) influence from this album, particularly on the song "Dark Globe". I read a couple reviews and they kind of trashed the album but don't believe them!
